Around 85% of American adults celebrate Mother’s Day every year and it is the second most popular holiday for giving gifts only after Christmas according to Hallmark. While consumers spend on various categories during Mother’s Day; food, drinks and dining out remains one of the largest spending categories.
To better understand how American adults are planning to dine out with their moms on Mother’s Day, we surveyed 650 American adults and asked them about their restaurant plans for Mother’s Day this year. Below are the key findings along with demographics and survey methodology discussed at the end.
67.7% of Americans plan to take their mom out to a restaurant on Mother’s Day this year while only 32.3% haven’t decided yet or are not planning to do so.
52.5% of Americans plant to take their moms to family style restaurants on Mother’s Day this year. Another 19.7% plan to take their moms to fine dining restaurants while 14.8% plan to take their moms to casual restaurants on Mother’s Day this year.
Americans who are planning to take their mom out to a restaurants on Mother’s Day expect to spend a total of $184.90 on average.
86.9% of Americans expect to spend more on Mother’s Day dining out this year compared to last year.
50.8% of Americans will take their moms out for dinner, while 27.9% will take their moms out for lunch and 14.8% will take their moms out for breakfast on Mother’s Day this year.
91.8% of American adults who are planning to take their mom out for a meal on Mother’s Day indicated that they would prefer to go to a restaurant that offers Mother’s Day exclusive meals and deals.
39.3% have already made a restaurant reservation for Mother’s Day while 55.7% are planning to make a reservation prior to dining out on Mother’s Day.
On average, Americans are planning to tip 17.6% while dining out during Mother’s Day this year.

For the purpose of this survey, we surveyed 650 adults across America to see how they are dining out with moms on Mother’s Day. The survey was carried out online on May 1st-3rd using Amazon Survey Services.
