According to Retail Council of Canada, 3 out of 4 Canadian adults celebrate Mother’s Day every year by making Mother’s Day related purchases. The number one category for consumption among Canadian consumers on Mother’s Day is food, drinks and eating out.
To better understand how Canadian adults are planning to dine out with their moms on Mother’s Day, we surveyed 410 Canadian adults and asked them about their restaurant plans for Mother’s Day this year. Below are the key findings along with demographics and survey methodology discussed at the end.
43.9% of Canadians plan to take their mom out to a restaurant on Mother’s Day this year while 22% haven’t decided yet and 34.1% are not planning to do so.
48.1% of Canadians plan to take their moms to family style restaurants on Mother’s Day this year. Another 11.1% plan to take their moms to fine dining restaurants while 14.8% plan to take their moms to casual restaurants on Mother’s Day this year. 18.5% still have not decided on the type of restaurant they will take their moms to dine out on Mother’s Day.
Canadians who are planning to take their mom out to a restaurants on Mother’s Day expect to spend an average of $162.45 on the meal.
51.9% of Canadians surveyed expect to spend the same amount on Mother’s Day dining out this year compared to last year. Another 29.6% expect to spend more while 14.8% expect to spend less on Mother’s Day dining out this year.
55.6% of Canadians will take their moms out for dinner, while 19.2% will take their moms out for lunch and 13.9% will take their moms out for breakfast on Mother’s Day this year.
59.4% of Canadian adults who are planning to take their mom out for a meal on Mother’s Day indicated that they would prefer to go to a restaurant that offers Mother’s Day exclusive meals and deals. While 41.6% indicate that Mother’s Day only meals and deals are not a factor in their choice of restaurant.
37% have already made a restaurant reservation for Mother’s Day while 29.6% are planning to make a reservation prior to dining out on Mother’s Day. 33.3% indicated that they will show to a restaurant without making a reservation.
On average, Canadians are planning to tip 17% while dining out during Mother’s Day this year.

For the purpose of this survey, we surveyed 410 adults across Canada to see how they are dining out with moms on Mother’s Day. The survey was carried out online on May 1st-3rd using Amazon Survey Services.
